Making cannabis butter is the easiest way to make cannabis-infused edibles. Making this butter can be a bit tricky, as it is important to use the right temperature to activate the psychoactive part of the plant.
To be able to achieve this, the flower must be heated slowly at a low temperature.
The first step of the process is to decarboxylate the cannabis flower.
What is Decarboxylation?
In the trichomes of the fresh flowers, you have the cannabinoid called THCA (tetrahydrocannabinolic acid). To be able to convert this THCA into THC (the psychoactive ingredient of the plant), we need to pass through the process of Decarboxylation first.
The necessary catalytic agents for decarboxylation to occur are: heat and time.
This is the main reason why is important to dry and cure your cannabis. When you are doing this process, that’s also a partial decarboxylation, but often you will still get some THCA in the plant together with some THC.
When you smoke the plant, that acts as an instant decarboxylation because of the heat being applied.
When making edibles, it is important that the THC is already present, so that our bodies are able to absorb it. “Heating cannabinoids at a lower temperature over time allows us to decarboxylate the cannabinoids while preserving the integrity of the material we use so that we may infuse it into what we consume.”- Leafly
HOW TO MAKE THE CANNABIS INFUSED BUTTER?
Keep in mind that you could also use coconut butter, or oil, instead of normal butter.
INGREDIENTS:
- 1 cup of butter
- 1 cup (7-10 grams) of ground cannabis, decarboxylated
Step 1: Decarb your cannabis
-Pre-heat the oven to 115 degrees Celsius.
-Place the cannabis on a non-stick surface
-Set timer to 30 – 40mins
-We recommend that every 10 mins you shake the tray a bit, or mix the cannabis to make sure all surface get heat.
Step 2: Grind
Using a grinder, grind the decarboxylated cannabis buds
Step 3: With 1 cup of water melt butter
Add 1 cup of butter and 1 cup of water to a pot, and simmer at low temperature for the butter to melt.
Step 4: Add the cannabis
As the butter melts add the ground cannabis.
Step 5: Simmer
Maintain in low heat and let it simmer for 2 – 3 hours. Don’t let it boil. Stir occasionally.
Step 6: Strain
Put a funnel on a jar and line it with cheesecloth. When the butter has cooled down, pour it over the cheesecloth funnel and allow it to strain freely.
Step 7: Refrigerate
